The city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 as a “unique example of a un walled colonial city”. It retains almost intact the original layout of the fifteenth century that already reflected by then the teacher Leonardo Torriani in his map of La Laguna. It also served as a reference to American colonial cities, such as Old Havana, Lima or Cartagena de Indias; with them he shares similar aesthetics of houses and streets.
Honestly, it is very well preserved, with beautiful buildings populating each of its streets. A good idea is to sign up for the guided routes that run through the most emblematic buildings. You can also do it on your own, moving at your own pace.
The streets are bustling, full of shops, cafes and bars, perfect to buy or to regain strength with a good coffee or a consistent meal depending on the case.
