The high nutritional value and its incomparable flavor make Tenerife chestnuts internationally recognized.

It became popular among peasants in the sixteenth century and, since then, the islander''s fondness for this fruit has not diminished. An example is the more than 20 species of chestnuts that are grown in the region of Acentejo, in the north of Tenerife.

In addition, there is a tradition that every November 29, coinciding with the festivities dedicated to San Andres, the wineries on the island open their doors to taste the new wine accompanied by stewed chestnuts, mojo and fish.

In Tenerife, chestnuts are eaten roasted, as an aperitif, both in homes and in kiosks spread throughout the squares and avenues during the fall. But they are also used to make jams, sweets or to accompany delicious traditional recipes.
